FUGUE (FUGA)
Director: Agnieszka Smoczyńska
After a two-year disappearance, free-spirited Alicja is reunited with her parents, husband and young son despite having no memory of them. Suddenly thrust back into a domestic life she has no recollection of choosing, Alicja struggles to reconcile her new and unfamiliar roles of dependability with the unshackled independence sprung by her recent mental break. With surreal, icy imagery and a seductively hypnotic atmosphere, director Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s sophomore feature burrows into the landscape of Alicja’s mind, excavating the societal burdens and duties expected of women, and whether personal freedom is truly attainable. After entrancing audiences with the 2016 horror-musical fairy tale THE LURE, Smoczyńska returns to AFI FEST with a dizzying psychological puzzle of identity and self-discovery. Mesmerizing from the jaw-dropping first frame to the last, FUGUE features a fiercely complex central performance by Gabriela Muskała, who also penned the film’s twisty screenplay. – Jesse Knight
COLD WAR (ZIMNA WOJNA)
Director: Paweł Pawlikowski
It’s Poland in the late 1950s and a team of musicians and broadcasters are touring the countryside in search of authentic folk music to spread and inspire patriotism. Wiktor, the star pianist and leader of this effort, immediately falls for young Zula, an incredible singer who stands apart from the provincial peasants. When their working relationship blossoms into something more amorous, things become complicated. Their musical success opens many doors, some of which lead to the chance to escape the Iron Curtain. But with the risk so high, the lovers must reexamine what will truly make them happy in a world so fraught with danger. Featuring spectacular musical performances and spellbinding black-and-white cinematography, Oscar® winner Paweł Pawlikowski returns to the film stage with a grand musical opus. – Lane Kneedler

A three-masted Polish sailing ship, currently on world tour celebrating 100th anniversary of Poland’s independence, will dock at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, berth 46 from Christmas Day to Thursday, Dec. 27th.
The tall ship, more than 300 feet long and weighing 2,255 gross tons, is named Dar Młodzieży and has been cruising around the world from its home in Gdynia Maritime University, Poland, since May — celebrating 100 years of Poland’s independence. During its visit to Los Angeles, the crew will meet with local officials and members of the Polish community, including those from the Los Angeles Consulate of the Government of Poland.
Poland gained its independence following the defeat of the Central Powers — Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire — in World War I. The armistice was signed on Nov. 11th, 1918.
For those who would like to greet the ship, please arrive at berth 46 around 9:45am on December 25th.
