“The Trial of Dali” is a comedic play set in 1948 Spain that depicts the legal troubles of the flamboyant Surrealist, artist Salvador Dali. Dali and his wife and muse Gala, return from the U.S. to Dali’s small home town of Figueres, in his native Spain, at a time when Dali is broken financially and artistically (although he would never admit it). Upon arrival, Dali is served with a summons to a trial prosecuted by a vengeful attorney bent on proving Dali’s art has violated the moral code. Ultimately to win his freedom, prove his relevance as an artist, and save his marriage, Dali must defend himself by defending his art. Be ready to “get surreal,” in this humorous, satirical play.

A SHORT SERIES ABOUT KRZYSZTOF KIEŚLOWSKI

Among the most acclaimed directors of modern times, Warsaw-born Krzysztof Kieślowski (1941-1996) began working in film as a documentarian, but the heavy hand of censorship in 1970s Poland pointed him toward fictional stories as a truer way to reflect reality. As a narrative filmmaker, Kieślowski proved a master at turning ideas and moral dilemmas into the stuff of human drama in such features as BLIND CHANCE and the 10-part Polish television series the DEKALOG, two episodes of which were expanded into the feature-length films A SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING and A SHORT FILM ABOUT LOVE.

By the 1990s, Kieślowski’s talent had earned global recognition, and his final four films were international co-productions that brought his vision to a much wider audience without artistic compromise. THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE earned three top awards at the Cannes Film Festival for its hypnotic look at two women (both played by Irène Jacob) who share a strange connection. But the director’s most famous achievement is his ambitious “Three Colors” trilogy. These meditations on liberty (BLUE), equality (WHITE) and fraternity (RED) served as a sublime coda to Kieślowski’s career; he announced his retirement with RED and died two years later.

Series programmed by John Hagelston and Gwen Deglise. Program notes by John Hagelston and Chris LeMaire.

Jack Fairweather: The Volunteer, One Man, an Underground Army, and the Secret Mission to Destroy Auschwitz.

Author Jack Fairweather in conversation with Dr. Michael Berenbaum, Director, Sigi Ziering Institute for Holocaust Studies and Professor of Jewish Studies, AJU

The little-known story of Witold Pilecki, who spent three years in Auschwitz clandestinely working to undermine the Germans and inform the Allies of Nazi crimes. Pilecki’s exploits were suppressed for decades by Poland’s Communist government, but with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the opening of archives in Warsaw, the story of his heroic mission emerged. The author draws on Pilecki’s own accounts, prisoners’ testimonies and interviews with those who fought beside him to tell about this hero who risked everything to bring the horrors of Auschwitz to light.
Jack Fairweather is a correspondent for the Washington Post and the Bagdad and Persian Gulf bureau chief for the Daily Telegraph. As an embedded reporter during the Iraq invasion, he won the British Press Award (the British equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize). He is the author of A War of Choice and The Good War.

POLAM’s 50th Anniversary Ball – October 5th 2019

Athenaeum at Caltech Pasadena
5-10pm

We are excited to share that this milestone anniversary celebration is being held at a very special venue, which has hosted such renowned academics as Albert Einstein and other Nobel Prize winners. The Athenaeum at Caltech in Pasadena can be compared to the Huntington Library with its original artwork and turn of the century ambiance.  In addition to the main dining room, there are several lounge areas, a library and a large outdoor enclosed patio for music and dancing.  Guests will have ample opportunity to move around and mingle or simply enjoy the evening’s entertainment.
This event is open to both members and non-members of the credit union.  We anticipate up to 300 guests. Seating assignments will be based on a first come, first serve basis, so get your tickets while they last.

2019 Paderewski Lecture-Recital

Three Paderewskis: Synopsis

At his grave, we meet three versions of Paderewski (one of them female): Ignacy the virtuoso pianist/composer, Jan the politician/founder of the Polish nation, and Paderewski the éminence grise / Paso Robles winemaker. Coming together and pulling apart, sifting through a lifetime of memories far too large for any one person, they summon the ghost of Antonina, their beloved long-dead first wife. In so doing, they summon the spirit of Poland itself. A compassionate opera about a man who changed the world not only through his music but through pure passion for life, whose memory instructs our own moment of political and moral crisis.
