“Ida” by Pawel Pawlikowski @ 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival
Jan 7 @ 5:00 pm – 6:45 pm

Ida

From acclaimed director Pawel Pawlikowski (Last Resort, My Summer of Love) comes IDA, a moving and intimate drama about a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland who, on the verge of taking her vows, discovers a dark family secret dating from the terrible years of the Nazi occupation.Eighteen-year-old Anna (stunning newcomer Agata Trzebuchowska), a sheltered orphan raised in a convent, is preparing to become a nun when the Mother Superior insists she first visit her sole living relative. Naïve, innocent Anna soon finds herself in the presence of her aunt Wanda (Agata Kulesza), a worldly and cynical Communist Party insider, who shocks her with the declaration that her real name is Ida and her Jewish parents were murdered during the Nazi occupation. This revelation triggers a heart-wrenching journey into the countryside, to the family house and into the secrets of the repressed past, evoking the haunting legacy of the Holocaust and the realities of postwar Communism. In this beautifully directed film, Pawlikowski returns to his native Poland for the first time in his career to confront some of the more contentious issues in the history of his birthplace. Powerfully written and eloquently shot, IDA is a masterly evocation of a time, a dilemma, and a defining historical moment; IDA is also personal, intimate, and human. The weight of history is everywhere, but the scale falls within the scope of a young woman learning about the secrets of her own past. This intersection of the personal with momentous historic events makes for what is surely one of the most powerful and affecting films of the year.”It haunted me. I can’t wait to see it again.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times”A compact gem of perfection. A total marvel.” – Dana Stevens, Slate

“KEBAB & HOROSCOPE” by Grzegorz Jaroszuk @ 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, Camelot Theatres
Jan 7 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Kebab

Polish helmer Grzegorz Jaroszuk’s colorful debut feature should be a breath of fresh air for festival programmers.

A former kebab-shop employee and an out-of-work horoscope writer declare themselves marketing experts and are hired to help a carpet emporium without customers in the droll shaggy-dog story “Kebab & Horoscope.” This colorfully stylized debut feature from Polish helmer Grzegorz Jaroszuk, known for his prize-winning shorts including “Frozen Stories,” displays a distinctive brand of eccentric humanism that draws inspiration from the works of Aki Kaurismaki, Roy Andersson and Petr Zelenka, among others. Even though the slender material occasionally feels padded, its delightful moments of inspired silliness will make it a breath of fresh air for festival programmers.

“WALKING UNDER WATER” by Eliza Kubarska @ 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, Camelot Theatres
Jan 10 @ 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Underwater

In the crystal clear waters off the coast of Borneo, a unique way of life threatens to disappear forever. For generations, the Badjao were oceanic nomads, living in harmony with the sea as fishermen and free divers. Nowadays, however, only a few Badjao remain, like Alexan, who still remembers the old ways. He hopes to pass his knowledge along to his ten-year-old nephew Sari, but time and opportunities are running out. Sari loves the sea, but it can only offer a hard life of subsistence fishing, while the nearby tourist resort sings a siren song of easy money.

Through the sensitive direction of Eliza Kubarska and remarkable underwater cinematography, Walking Under Water provides a haunting portrait of timeless traditions struggling to survive in the modern world.

Big-shot prosecutor Teodor Szacki (the excellent Robert Wieckiewicz from Walesa: Man of Hope and In Darkness) divorces his wife and leaves Warsaw to start a new life in the picturesque medieval town of Sandomierz, an area with a long history of anti-Semitism. He is soon called in to investigate a strange and bloody murder. The discovery of a large blade at the crime scene associated with kosher slaughter prompts some to suggest a Jewish connection…

While Szacki struggles to find the killer, victims are in no short supply, prompting a wave of anti-Semitic hysteria in the town. In this gripping adaptation of prize-winning author Zygmunt Miloszewski’s crime thriller, Szacki’s investigation (aided by a veteran cop and a reluctant local colleague) leads inexorably back into the painful history of Catholic-Jewish relations in Poland, where legend and fact often seem to have blurred in the public consciousness and even a grain of truth is frustratingly elusive.

The great Polish maverick Jerzy Skolimowski (Essential Killing; Deep End) may be 77, but you wouldn’t know it from this flamboyant, energetic exercise in pure suspense, a technical tour-de-force that plays with film form as if the medium is still new. The story covers just 11 minutes on a certain afternoon, and what’s more, apparently in real time, albeit played and replayed from many different vantage points (and with some sleight of hand) as a not entirely random cross-section of urbanites converge on a fateful hotel plaza. Among them: an actress auditioning for a Hollywood filmmaker; her jealous husband; a reckless courier; a disgraced hotdog vendor; a window cleaner; a dog; and a gaggle of hungry nuns.

Skolimowski tracks their movements from myriad visual sources, including smartphones, surveillance cameras, webcams and audition tapes, choreographing chaos (or is it destiny?) with mischievous glee and implacable precision.

“My focus was on seeing my characters through a continuous series of almost abstract moments, as accidental and banal—or poignant—as only life can be.” Jerzy Skolimowski
