BREAKING THE LIMITS
NAJLEPSZY
2017, 108 min, Poland, Dir: Lukasz Palkowski

Previously known as THE FASTEST, this uplifting biopic about one man’s remarkable transformation tells the true story of Jerzy Gorski, former junkie turned athletic champion. After spending 13 years struggling with heroin addiction, Gorski underwent intense physical and mental rehabilitation to become Poland’s Double Ironman World Champion. Director Lukasz Palkowski spares none of the gritty details in this realistic yet inspiring account of Gorski’s journey. The film was a major blockbuster in its native Poland, as well as winning Best Production Design and Best Debut Actor (actress Kamila Kaminska) at the Polish Film Awards.

Movie screening: DEER BOY by Katarzyna Gondek as part of HOLYSHORTS @ TCL CHINESE 6 THEATRE
Aug 11 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

deerboy

A hunter’s son falls asleep counting the jumping deer. One of them got shot, one bleeds a little, another one limps away from the meadow. And the antlers grow and grow on the boy’s head, puncturing the pillow, as they do every night.
“Deer boy” is a horror fairy tale about instincts. About the first hunt. About blood and nature. Parental warmth meshes here with disgust, dreams with reality and childlike sensitivity with the lessons on killing. The film is based on animal sounds not giving a word to the characters trapped in its story. The deer are jumping over the sleeping boy’s head. Eventually one of them will have to be killed, now won’t he?

Movie screening: BEYOND BRAVERY – Witold Pilecki Auschwitz Volunteer @ St. Monika Catholic Community "Auditorium"
Aug 12 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Bravery

In 1940, the Polish Underground wanted to know what was happening inside the recently opened Auschwitz concentration camp. Polish army officer Witold Pilecki volunteered to be arrested by the Germans and report from inside the camp. His intelligence reports, smuggled out in 1941, were among the first eyewitness accounts of Auschwitz atrocities: the extermination of Soviet POWs, its function as a camp for Polish political prisoners, and the “final solution” for Jews. Pilecki received brutal treatment until he escaped in April 1943; soon after, he wrote a brief report. This book is the first English translation of a 1945 expanded version. In the foreword, Poland’s chief rabbi states, “If heeded, Pilecki’s early warnings might have changed the course of history.” Pilecki’s story was suppressed for half a century after his 1948 arrest by the Polish Communist regime as a “Western spy.” He was executed and expunged from Polish history. Pilecki writes in staccato style but also interjects his observations on humankind’s lack of progress: “We have strayed, my friends, we have strayed dreadfully…. We are a whole level of hell worse than animals!”

Spring break 2007, Southern Poland. After ten years of absence Krzysiek takes his son Hubert for a hunting trip. When he realizes that his son is not a kid anymore and reviving their relationship is harder than he previously assumed, he does everything to win him over. Treated as an adult and equal, Hubert slowly opens to his father. Alcohol, thrill of a hunt and warped sense of masculinity ease the broken bond, but there is something that Hubert struggles to tell his father. While two men are getting closer some lines get crossed and Krzysiek’s immaturity leds to a tragedy.
