Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860-1941) is remembered as a virtuoso pianist, composer, philanthropist and humanitarian. Unfortunately, his role in regaining Poland’s independence after World War I is less well known. This lecture focuses on Paderewski’s political activities between 1910 and 1922, his role in the “Front Morges” political formation in Switzerland in the 1930s, and on his last year of life, when Paderewski became a World War II refugee in America. Rare photographs from the Paderewski Paso Robles Collection held at the Polish Music Center, USC, will illustrate the lecture.

President’s Polish Potluck Luncheon

Monday, January 15, 2018

12 noon – 2 pm

1706 Marian Ave, Thousand Oaks
(in N Lynn Ranch between Lotus Ave & Camino Manzanas)
Let’s start 2018 off with a casual get-together at my home with a Polish Potluck luncheon. This will be our 4th year!

(Optional Movie: in English – movie celebrating the end of WWI as well as Polands return as a country following luncheon)

Bring something Polish.

Do not worry if we have duplicates – I’m sure it all will work out and we’ll have a lot of fun!

We all make our special Polish dishes a little different and that is what is so wonderful about a potluck.

A main dish for 6-8 people, a desert, a salad, some condiments, etc. would also be appropriate.

If you don’t make it yourself, several stores in southern California carry a variety of Polish items – cookies, jam, sausages, pierogi, etc.

If you have any Polish dishware, you can serve it on it.

Hopefully, there will be leftovers to take back to your family members.

Adam Michnik “Poland between Democracy and Authoritarianism”, lecture. @ Center for European and Russian Studies
Feb 8 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Adam_Michnik_(2012)

Adam Michnik is a distinguished Polish intellectual, dissident, journalist, and advocate for human rights and civil society.
A prominent dissident during the communist period in Poland, he spent six years as a political prisoner. In the 1970s, he was a founding member of the Committee for the Defense of Workers, and of the Flying University, an underground network that brought together intellectuals and worker activists. Michnik was a key Solidarity activist throughout the 1980s and a negotiator for the Solidarity team during the Roundtable Talks in 1989 that brought communist rule in Poland to a peaceful end. Between 1989 and 1991, he served in the Sejm, Poland’s Parliament.

Constitution of 3rd May, 1791.
May 3 @ 12:00 am – 11:45 pm

Konstytucja_3_Maja

The Constitution of 3 May 1791 (Polish: Konstytucja 3 Maja, was adopted by the Great Sejm (parliament) of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, a dual monarchy comprising the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Drafted over 32 months beginning on 6 October 1788, and formally adopted as the Government Act (Ustawa rządowa), the legislation was designed to redress the Commonwealth’s political defects. The system of Golden Freedoms, also known as the “Nobles’ Democracy,” had conferred disproportionate rights on the nobility (szlachta) and over time had corrupted politics. The adoption of the Constitution was preceded by a period of agitation for—and gradual introduction of—reforms beginning with the Convocation Sejm of 1764 and the election of Stanisław August Poniatowski as the Commonwealth’s last king.

Bravery

In 1940, the Polish Underground wanted to know what was happening inside the recently opened Auschwitz concentration camp. Polish army officer Witold Pilecki volunteered to be arrested by the Germans and report from inside the camp. His intelligence reports, smuggled out in 1941, were among the first eyewitness accounts of Auschwitz atrocities: the extermination of Soviet POWs, its function as a camp for Polish political prisoners, and the “final solution” for Jews. Pilecki received brutal treatment until he escaped in April 1943; soon after, he wrote a brief report. This book is the first English translation of a 1945 expanded version. In the foreword, Poland’s chief rabbi states, “If heeded, Pilecki’s early warnings might have changed the course of history.” Pilecki’s story was suppressed for half a century after his 1948 arrest by the Polish Communist regime as a “Western spy.” He was executed and expunged from Polish history. Pilecki writes in staccato style but also interjects his observations on humankind’s lack of progress: “We have strayed, my friends, we have strayed dreadfully…. We are a whole level of hell worse than animals!”
